- The island is about 59 km (36.7 mi) long, 8 km (5 mi) at the widest and the highest point is 1011 feet

- There is 154 km (95.7 mi) of coastline

- As of 2015 the population was estimated at around 109,000 people

- The average temperature is 26°C (79°F)

- Spanish and English are the main spoken languages - English is very common in restaurants, shops and main cities, so don't worry if you don't speak Spanish!

- The local currency is the Honduran Lempira, but US Dollars are also accepted

- It's surrounded by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the largest barrier reef in the Caribbean Sea

- Roatan has become an important cruise ship, scuba diving and eco-tourism destination in Honduras and in Central America

- There are two cruise ship ports here - Mahogany & Roatan Village

- Tourism is its most important economic sector, though fishing is also an important source of income for islanders

- Roatan is located 40 miles from the mainland city of La Ceiba.

- There are more than 400 taxis on Roatan!

- Currently, you are only able to build 3 stories high - there are no sky scrapers here!

- Coxen Hole - sounds odd right! Well this is the main city in Roatan and was actually named after a pirate - Captain John Coxen

- Back in the day, Roatan was originally home to more than 5,000 pirates!

- Homes on Stilts - they are built this way to prevent sand flies inside your home

- Between the two cruise ship ports, about 1 million people visit Roatan per year

-  West Bay Beach was voted the best beach in Central America on TripAdvisor for two years in a row and named the top 15 beaches of the world by TripAdvisor
